This emblem has a story to it. What had been known and accepted as a single muscle sheath since Vaselius’ first report more than 400 years back in medical history (1555) turned out to be a triple loop system when Prof. Ahmed Shafik came across it in his search of new alternatives in urinary diversion.
Hence, together with the puborectalis muscle, the top, intermediate and base loop form the anal sphincteric system, with each of its components having the ability of doing the job alone if need be.
None of the proctological journals took courage to print this revolutionary finding on its pages, and that is why you find Prof. Ahmed Shafik’s new anatomico-proctologic entity, believe it or not, published in the journal of Investigative Urology.
Today, his triple loop system is a cornerstone in the pelvic floor anatomy and imposes itself as its emblem.
